Anne Sibley O'Brien.
In this sixth Jamaica book, Jamaica's friend Brianna is disappointed with her dance recital part: she's a flower instead of butterfly queen. Brianna wins the starring role briefly when the queen (Brianna's sister) comes down with strep throat. But Brianna soon falls ill as well, and both sisters have to miss the recital. In a satisfying ending, the girls put on a private recital at home. Occasionally stiff artwork illustrates the text.

With supplies from the craft store, an Asian-American family of five builds a dragon kite together. Double-page spreads show the steps of gluing, cutting, and painting, then the fun of flying the creation. Breezy, vibrant illustrations capture the pull of the wind not only on kite strings but also on the eager children. The minimal text seems an afterthought to the patterned, whimsical art. A brief history of kite flying is appended.

Religion in American Life series.
This book detailing how three major faiths born in Asia have fared in this country emphasizes the common foes each religious group has faced--prejudice, assimilation, and generational antagonisms--rather than describing their tenets and practices. Black-and-white photos and reproductions of documents--some clear, others faded--complement the informative, accurate text. Bib., ind.

Collective Biographies series.
Each volume profiles ten notable figures, some famous (Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesse Jackson, Judy Blume) and some less well known, such as activist Fannie Lou Hamer and author Bharati Mukherjee. The rushed entries, accompanied by standard black-and-white photographs, are too glib for the subjects' personalities to emerge, though the profiles may serve as good starting points for report writers. Illustrated by
June Otani.
From waking to bedtime, a cycle of brief poems follows a busy little golden brown mop of a dog through the day. The poems are voiced by the dog's constant companion, a self-possessed little girl, and the language is simple and concrete enough for the youngest listeners. Otani's pen and watercolor illustrations make a fine complement to the verse, characterizing the pair as curious and alert as well as affectionate.
